Great Defense, Big Play Offense Lead Passion To Season Opening Win In Detroit

For the first time in two years, the Passion suited up for a game and didn’t waste much time to get into the endzone as Arielle Smith ran one in from 3 yards out early in the 1st Quarter for the first touchdown of the season. It was a defensive battle for the rest of the first quarter before the Passion scored early in the 2nd Quarter on a 46-yard pass from Alyssa George to Marcelina Chavez and Chavez added another touchdown a few minutes later on a 54-yard run. After a fumble recovery late in the quarter, the Passion found their way back into the endzone when George found Ellie Mularski for a 26-yard touchdown to give the Passion a 27-0 lead headed to the Half.

The defense continued their strong play in the game in the 2nd half and was able to hold Detroit’s offense in check. Detroit would score a touchdown late, but the Passion got their first win of the season with the 27-8 victory.

The defense was on fire from the opening kickoff as they combined for 3 Interceptions, 1 fumble recovery, 5 pass deflections and 4 sacks. Hannah Daman led the way with 12 tackles followed by Kaitlain Niedermeyer and Devon Peace who each had 8 tackles. But, it was a combined effort from the front seven that included Daman, Neidermeyer, Peace, Kim Zubovic, Chelsea Biggers and Kamea Lowe.

It was also a no-fly zone in the secondary as Rebecca Ehrgood, Ashley DiCicco, Lawanda Pearson, Ellie Mularski, Jasmine Jones and Niaja Brokaw did not allow any Detroit Venom wide receivers to get open all night. Pearson, Jones and Brokaw each had an interception as well.

The offense was able to control the tempo of the game all night led by first year starting Quarterback Alyssa George who threw two touchdowns and was effective running the ball in spots as well. Mularski and Chavez combined for 82 yards receiving and two touchdowns. Chavez also helped control the tempo on the ground along with Maria Fautali as they combined for 89 rushing yards and a touchdown.

The Passion are off the next two weekends before they are back at West Allegheny High School for the Home Opener on April 30 against the Tri-State Warriors.
