Passion Open Season with Hard Fought Victory over Boston

Boston opened the scoring tonight to jump to an early lead, but the Passion were able to respond on a 12-yard pass from Horton to Baker to tie the game at 7 and the score would remain tied until the 2nd Quarter.

Boston opened up the scoring once again in the 2nd Quarter, but the Passion were able to respond right away with back to back touchdown passes from Horton to Cozzo (43 and 29 yards).  Boston scored one more touchdown and Horton found Vasquez on an 18 yard pass to conclude the 1st Half and the Passion led 28-21.

The 3rd Quarter belonged to the Passion as they added a 30-yard Field Goal from rookie Kirsten Green (her 1st of her career) and a 19 yard pass from Horton to Baker.  Boston added a few touchdowns in the 4th Quarter, but Foster ran it in from 4 yards out and the Passion defense held on to defeat the Boston Renegades 44-41.

It was Slippery Rock University Night at the game and several Rock alum played big roles in tonight’s victory. Head Coach and SRU alum Teresa Conn gives credit to the team as a whole, but recognizes the following key fellow SRU alum who played above and beyond tonight: Quarterback Lisa Horton, who threw for 191 yards and 5 touchdowns.  Running Back Tara Catone ran it for 94 yards.  Wide Receiver Angela Baker had 53 receiving yards and 2 touchdowns.  In her first Passion game, Ellisyn Mularski caught her first two passes of her career, including a key 22 yarder on a trick play late in the 4th Quarter

On the defensive side of the ball, success started with strong pressure from the defensive line of Niedermeyer, Zubovic, Cross, and Edmonds all night. Niedermeyer led the team with 8 tackles and a sack.  At the next level, linebackers Montgomery, Daman, Smith and Ramsey made huge plays all over the field. Daman had 7 tackles and an interception. The Passion secondary, led by Cozzo, Baker, Meister and DiCicco, broke up key passes and and the defense kept Cahill under pressure and didn’t let her get comfortable in the pocket all night.

The Passion will face historic rival, the D.C Divas next week here at West Allegheny at 6:30 pm.
