Pittsburgh Passion Win Back to Back World Championships!

On Saturday July 25, the Pittsburgh Passion traveled to Rock Hill, SC and captured the IWFL World Championship! This is their 2nd consecutive World Championship and 3rd overall.  They extend their winning streak to an amazing and record breaking 22 games in a row.

The Utah Falcons opened the scoring quickly by returning the opening kickoff of the game and converting a 2-pt conversion to take an 8-0 early lead.  The Passion answered right away as Tara Catone ran it in from a yard out.  The teams exchanged touchdowns the rest of the first half.  Other Passion touchdowns of the half were a 13-yard touchdown pass from Horton to Wojdowski and a 5-yard touchdown pass from Horton to Baker.  The Passion trailed 24-20 at the half.

The Passion started the 2nd half fast, outscoring Utah 21-0 in the 3rd quarter on touchdown passes from Horton to Baker (4 yards) and Horton to Wojdowski (7 yards).  The 4th quarter started with score of 41-24 and then Utah rallied back with 2 quick scores to cut the margin to a 4 point game to make it a true championship battle.  Both the Passion defense and special teams responded in a big way and held on to the lead to win the title game by a score of 41-37.

The offensive leaders of the game were Quarterback Lisa Horton who threw for 207 yards and 4 touchdowns. Horton’s 207 passing yards were the most in Passion championship game history.  Running back Tara Catone ran for 206 yards and 2 touchdowns. Catone’s 206 rushing yards were the most in Passion Championship history. Wide receivers Rachel Wojdowski and Angela Baker combined for 14 receptions, 147 yards and 4 touchdowns (2 each).

The Passion defense was the first in the league to slow down a strong Utah high scoring offense this season. It was a tremendous collective D-unit effort that had a huge impact in this victory.   Defensive leaders tonight were safety Kim Beaver who led the team with 7 tackles, Tia Montgomery, Olivia Griswold and Janice Masters combined for 15 tackles and 3 sacks.  DE Kim Zubovic had 5 tackles and a fumble recovery.
